Data Security

The Lantern Platform was specifically architected with security as the utmost concern. Lantern’s database connection utilizes the security mechanisms available in the data store. Lantern obtains the data store connection properties (for its own metadata and the user’s system data) from the user, and stores this information in an encrypted format. Security best practice recommend enabled windows integrated security (wherever applicable/possible) instead of specifying DB User Name/Password format. Popular data stores such as MS SQL Server and ORACLE support secured communication between Client and Server, but they are not configured in the default installation process, DB Administrators have to configure the servers for secured communication separately. Once the secured communication settings are complete, Lantern can now utilize the secured communication protocols during Authentication and Authorization with the data stores.

One of the key components of a robust BI solution is the ability to effect and manage Single sign-on (SSO); the property of access control of multiple related, but independent software systems. With this property a user logs in with a single ID and password to gain access to a connected system or systems without using different usernames or passwords, or in some configurations seamlessly sign on at each system. This is typically accomplished using the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and stored LDAP databases on servers.

Another facet of Lantern which is not found or supported in Traditional BI is Object-oriented security architecture where users and their roles are treated as objects, which allows the administrators the ability to define security rights just once as an object, which is then used multiple times across systems. This also ensures a smoother and more efficient rights management. Permissions can then be defined once and set for roles, groups, individual reports etc. allowing for the ability to view, modify, delete, print, export, preview and more, according to the Lantern Object.
